Restaurant Fire, Woodland Road, Spring Twp
Sun, Jun 6th, 2021 3:30:00 am On a very hot and humid Sunday afternoon of June 6, Wyomissing FD Tower 79, TSFR Engine 85, RFD Ladder 1, West Reading Engine 64, Kenhorst Engine 69 and Greenfields Engine 55, Muhlenberg FD Co 66 RIT and Western Berks EMS Medic 6512 were dispatched to 945 Woodland Rd, Wyomissing Borough for a fire in a local restaurant. Mt Pleasant Quint 30 responded as cover for E55. The dispatch information advised that alarms were sounding, and smoke was filling the kitchen.

L79 responded in lieu of TW79 under Captain Holmes and arrived on location observing a one-story commercial occupancy being evacuated and with fire showing on Side B. Command was established by Capt. 79 and passed to RFD Car 2 (Kemmery). L79 positioned to gain the roof and allow for the first in engine to access the building. RE85 under Captain Conner arrived and was directed to initiate fire attack on the visible fire on Side Bravo. Other members entered the building thru the front door and encountered heavy smoke banking down to near the floor. L79 personnel accessed the roof and began vertical ventilation.

RE85 arrived and stretched a 2" hose line to attack the fire on the side of the building. A request was placed to the next arriving engine to complete the water supply which was handled by E64. A second 2" line was dry-stretched to the interior in the event the extension was uncovered during overhaul.

DC85 (Schartel) arrived and met with Command. Command was then transferred and RFD C2 was assigned as Operations. FM43 was summoned and, due to the heat of the day and intense activity level, the next due engine and truck (E36, L18) were special called and put to work on arrival. The balance of the 2nd alarm was struck shortly thereafter and placed in Level 2 staging. Chief 13 was assigned as Staging Officer. EMS established a rehab group.

The bulk of the fire was found in the exterior walls and roof spaces. Most of the work was therefore focused on digging this out, exposing and extinguishing it. Primary and secondary searches were also completed and both gas and electric utilities were requested. The initial crews were relieved by mutual aid, and then sent to rehab. These additional crews were used to complete ventilation and overhaul.

The scene was eventually reduced to L79, RE85 and M6521 to assist FM 43 with the initial investigation. FM43 was joined by the PA State Police Fire Marshal. All companies were returned as the investigation continued.
