PRESS RELEASE
Thu, Aug 5th, 2021 2:05:00 pm
For Immediate Release
August 5, 2021
Contact: Chief Colin Hackman
610-898-1452
Reference: Fire Prevention and Smoke Alarms

Each year, needless fire deaths occur in homes due to lack of or non-working smoke detectors. Between January 1 and August 4, 2021, the US Fire Administration reported sixty (60) people died in residential fires because of missing or non-working smoke detectors. Locally, fire deaths may have been prevented had there been smoke detectors installed.

The Township of Spring Fire Rescue Services and Wyomissing Fire Department have a very active smoke detector program for their residents. In the past five (5) years, Spring Township firefighters have installed 988 smoke detectors and 515 carbon monoxide alarms. Wyomissing firefighters have installed 239 smoke detectors and 131 carbon monoxide alarms. If you do not have a smoke detector or carbon monoxide alarm, please contact either department and schedule the installation or replacement.
Smoke detectors have a life of ten (10) years and carbon monoxide alarms have a life of seven (7) years. If the alarms are older, they need to be replaced immediately. The fire departments first objective is to ensure your safety and those in your home. The presence of the detectors will provide the early warning, hopefully allowing enough time to safely get out of your house. Immediately contact 911 if there is a fire, even if you believe the fire has been extinguished.

To schedule a smoke detector or carbon monoxide alarm installation, please call:
